As the politics of Hrothulf, Hygmod, Hrothgar, and a thegn named Ingeld become more bitter and pathetic, Grendel defends his terrorizing of the Danes, claiming that his violence has resulted in great deeds and given the people humanity, thus making him their creator.

Beowulf himself plays a relatively small role in the novel, but he is still the only human hero that can match and kill Grendel.
