The fact that the Shaper sings for money, though, seems to undercut the heroism of his poetry, as it means he is creating this art for selfish ends. A bull found him and charged at him, though unable to harm Grendel significantly. Beowulf tells Hrothgar and his men that he has come to defeat Grendel for them.
If a vegetable is split into many different pieces, nothing changes from piece to piece; its organization of molecules remains consistent throughout its body. Upon their arrival, Unferth mockingly claims that the leader of the visitors has lost a challenge to another champion.
Grendel recalls his youth. Active Themes Grendel describes how humans would gather around meadhall tables and boast. When Unferth passes out from exhaustion, Grendel takes him back to Hart to live out his days in frustrated mediocrity, stopping him from having a heroic death.
They kill for all sorts of reasons. But at this time Grendel would not usually murder humans. The unnamed leader of their group, who can be identified as the hero Beowulf, frightens and excites Grendel. Later, Grendel reminisces about his early experiences in life, beginning with his childhood days of exploring the caves inhabited by him, his mother and other creatures with which he is unable to speak.
Grendel then watches a religious ceremony and considers the futility and role of religion. She is a beautiful, pure young woman who was given to Hrothgar as a peace offering. Every once in a while, the humans sense that their systems are actually nonsense—that is where the Shaper steps in.
Grendel is frightened by the humans, who seem in many ways crueler than Grendel. As he is able to evade its blows, he falls asleep, only to wake surrounded by humans.
Occasionally an argument would break out and one man would kill another. Though he looks like a beast, he is intelligent. His meadhall became piled high with gold and other treasures. Although he feels related to the humans, Grendel still sees them and their behavior as not really impacting him.
As the politics of Hrothulf, Hygmod, Hrothgar, and a thegn named Ingeld become more bitter and pathetic, Grendel defends his terrorizing of the Danes, claiming that his violence has resulted in great deeds and given the people humanity, thus making him their creator.
Beowulf himself plays a relatively small role in the novel, but he is still the only human hero that can match and kill Grendel.
He begins to feel a strange, voyeuristic bond with them. As he cried for his mother, he was approached by a group of men who, for no real reason, attacked him. Since he was not accepted he would have to take the role of the great destroyer at the end of the story.
He grabs a sleeping man to eat him, but it turns out to be Beowulf, who was only pretending to sleep. Grabbing the wrist of another, he realizes that it is an alert Beowulf, and that he has grabbed his arm.“Find a pile of gold and sit on it.” ― John Gardner, Grendel.
